THE COUNTDOWN
FLASHBACK TO JUNE, 2003... VBS NURSERY SCHOOL GRADUATION...
My son Joshua and his classmates have just graduated nursery school to begin their education at VBS Day School. Our esteemed Rabbi and Teacher, Rabbi Feinstein addresses the parents and guests. He tells us to hold on close to our little ones, because “we will blink once and they will become Bar Mitzvah. Blink twice, and they will be ready to leave for college.” How wise he is!
FLASHFORWARD TO PRESENT DAY...
I really tried not to blink, but we are at the beginning of the month I have been dreading for the entire school year. In less than 3 weeks, my husband and I are taking Josh to school to begin his college journey at Indiana University. While I have not yet seen the campus, Josh immediately felt at home during his visit and campus orientation. He's understandably nervous, but excited for the new adventure that awaits. Me? Not so much! We're talking about the youngest child off to college.
As parents, we have spent 18 years nurturing and protecting him. Like many others, Josh grew up in “the bubble”. He has gone to Jewish Day School since baby classes. Josh played sports, graduated Milken, went to camp Alonim with the same group of kids he has know in the community. Of course we have encouraged his decisions and choices as he grew, but I admit that I have always known his friends and girlfriends. Now that he will be far away and involved with many different types of people and situations that won't happen anymore. I know that's the way it's supposed to be, it's just hard to accept.
Our tradition teaches us that we should pass down our wisdom to our children, L'dor Va Dor, so that they will be able to pass wisdom to their children. I can only hope that Josh has learned from the lessons and values we have given him as Jewish parents in our home and here in our VBS community. Wherever he goes in the world, Joshua will always have our supportive VBS community with him.
