Leviyat Hameit
Every morning traditional Jews pray a beautiful prayer. It is called “Eilu D'varim” " It talks about important Mitzvot. One of the most important of these Mitzvot, is “Leviyat Hameit” " “Burial of the deceased”. In other words, attending the funeral, and escorting the deceased to his final resting place.
We have had many funerals in these past few weeks here at our synagogue. I have watched first hand, our clergy's outreach to families who have a very sick family member. I have seen again and again, the kindness, and compassion of our clergy. So much care and love are given to families who are truly suffering. People whose hearts are breaking at the death of a spouse, or another family member need our guidance.
During the Shiva " week of mourning, again with grace and sensitivity, I have watched our clergy lead moving services in homes of the bereaved. They ask family and friends to speak about the deceased man or woman, tell of special moments, and hopefully lighten the heavy burden.
In truth, I feel blessed to be part of a fraternity that tries to help people at a significant moment of their life.
