Summary |
“Mordechai recorded the events of Purim " He sent dispatches to all the Jews throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus, near and far, charging them to observe the fourteenth and fifteenth of Adar, every year " the same days on which the Jews enjoyed relief from their foes and the same month which had been transformed for them from one of grief and mourning to one of festive joy. They were to observe them as days of feasting and merrymaking, and as an occasion for sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor.” (Megillat Esther 9:20-22)
Purim is the celebration of overcoming adversity. It is a time when we remember that Jews have been despised at times throughout history for upholding beliefs that are contrary to popular modes of expression. While the brave Mordechai would not stand in deference to the haughty Haman, Jews reaffirmed their belief in being servants of God and bowing low to the awesome power of mitzvot " our guidelines for ethical living.
It wasn't just enough to make a great feast celebrating the twisted turn of events. Mordechai decreed that we are to celebrate this miracle by doing two special deeds! We remember this time " we turn the world right side up -- by giving gifts to each other and by giving gifts to the poor. How strange it seems that by giving a gift to another we are somehow setting right a world that was once turned upside down. Giving to others brings us out of our dark moments and helps us and the one we give to enjoy the light of sharing.
Enjoy the food. Enjoy the gifts. This is a time to celebrate giving to each other. So, give in good health. L'Chayyim!
