This week's celebration of Tu B'Shvat brought the spirit of growth and renewal to The ECLC, connecting us with Israel's traditions and natural wonders.
Tu B'Shvat: Honoring Nature and Heritage
Tu B'Shvat, the New Year for Trees, is a time to celebrate the earth's bounty and recognize our role in its perseverance. This year, we delved into the significance of the Shivat Haminim, the seven species of Israel:
Wheat (חִטָּה, Chittah)
Barley (שְׂעוֹרָה, Se'orah)
Grapes (גֶּפֶן, Gefen)
Figs (תְּאֵנָה, Te'enah)
Pomegranates (רִמּוֹן, Rimon)
Olives (זַיִת, Zayit)
Dates/Honey (תָּמָר, Tamar)
These species symbolize the fertility of the land and our connection to it.
Coinciding with Tu B'Shvat is the historic date chosen for the first Knesset assembly, linking our cultural and political roots to the land and its fruits.
Students Embracing Tu B'Shvat
Our students actively participated in Tu B'Shvat festivities, from planting seeds and learning about sustainable growth to engaging in art projects that reflect the beauty of the Shivat Haminim and other Tu BeShvat vocabulary. These activities foster a hands-on understanding of our heritage and the importance of environmental care that aligns with the Jewish Value of “Shomrie Adama” Keepers of the earth.
As we reflect on this Tu B'Shvat, let's carry the message of nurturing and growth into the rest of the year.
Please Note:
Pick-up will be at Makin Burdorf (Not Sher), and the 7th grade will be back from their Tzedek America Field Trip by 3pm.
