7th Grade’s Journey through Racial Justice
Our 7th-grade class embarked on their third Tzedek America social action experience, focusing on the central theme of Racial Justice. Our visit to Santa Monica was both enlightening and moving. We had the honor of meeting Robbie Jones, a dedicated activist in the city, and Pastor Rondell Eskridge, who shared their profound wisdom and personal narratives.
Exploring Santa Monica through the lens of Racial Justice, we delved into the history of the erased neighborhood of Belmar Park and the once-segregated Inkwell Beach. These firsthand accounts and the local history opened our eyes to the struggles and resilience within our community. I shared insights about Rabbi Heschel's alliance with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma and reflected on the shared experiences of discrimination and solidarity between the Jewish and Black communities. Here is one of the poems written by the 7th-grade student:
What would it be like to live among others of different descents and different intents?
Sounds like mistreated people and unfair laws.
I pray that everyone becomes equal and are all the same no matter the color of ur skin, ur gender, or what u are or want to be.
I believe we can thrive and try to survive together forever with no more separation or segregation.
Looking Forward
These experiences remind us of the power of education to inspire, challenge, and transform. As we continue to navigate these new and exciting times at the Tech Academy, and as our 7th graders deepen their understanding of social justice, we are reminded of our commitment to nurturing informed, empathetic, and engaged citizens.
Plant a Tree in Israel, and Support the ECLC!
Open through February 4th.
Don't miss out!
ECLC families are invited to plant a tree in Israel while also helping the ECLC win a grant for future Israel programming at our school!
Jewish National Fund-USA has planted over 260 million trees in Israel. While this is an impressive achievement, more is always needed due to natural forest regrowth, forest fires, and arson. We encourage you to donate now.
Donating through this school page will also enable us to win funding for our Israel programming. Let’s be one of the top three schools that raises the most money so we can get a grant for future programs!
Please donate and share this amazing opportunity to help our school and do good for the earth with your family and friends. Click HERE to donate, plant a tree, and support the ECLC!
